Often considered one of the prettiest villages in Spain this picturesque fishing village of Gipuzkoa is a favorite for many locals during the summer. More than just a pretty town this is also a site where many battles were fought during the Napoleonic wars, the village boasts a historic quarter packed with history and small labyrinth of streets to explore, a nearby fort that was a strategic defensive point overlooking the city and in contrast with a traditional fishing quarter with the typical red, white and green houses.
The town’s strategic location at the mouth of the river Bidesoa next to the sea, the Spanish/French border and San Sebastian make it the perfect destination for a relaxing day by the sea.
Getting to Hondarribia is easy by car or public transport from San Sebastian. There are regular boat rides available to Hendeye. In Hondarribia there are a wide selection of excellent pintxos bars to explore. Over the summer Hondarribia hosts a popular international Jazz festival. Rooms get booked up very quickly during this time so be sure to check in advance.
